Millions
of tires have been
recalled in recent years
due to dangerous
defects. Many of these
tires are dangerous
because tire tread
separation may occur
when in use, when the
tread separates from the
tire itself due to
design or manufacturing
defects. Tire tread
separation may occur
after heavy wear to the
tires and improper
inflation, but a
defective tire may
separate while still
relatively new and
inflated properly.
In certain cases, tread
separation may cause a
tire blowout, while in
other cases of tread
separation the tire may
stay inflated. In either
situation, the driver is
at risk for an accident
and may need to perform
emergency maneuvering to
regain control of the
vehicle and avoid a
serious accident.
In the event that an SUV
or 15 passenger van is
equipped with defective
tires, the driver and
passengers are at an
increased risk for
accidents because the
vehicle's higher center
of gravity makes it more
prone to rollover
accidents. Tire tread
separation may occur at
a variety of speeds,
including speeds as low
as 20 miles per hour.
One major tire recall
occurred in 2000, when
Bridgestone/Firestone,
Inc. recalled close to
7,000,000 Firestone ATX,
Firestone ATX II, and
Wilderness AT tires. The
recalled tire models
have been associated
with more than 200
deaths and 700 injuries
throughout the country.
An auto manufacturer who
uses cheap materials in
order to save money may
be putting consumers at
risk producing
dangerously low quality
products.
Tire manufacturers must
be held liable for the
injuries and fatalities
that are caused by the
tires that they produce.
If you or a loved one
has suffered serious
injuries as the result
of a defective tire, you
should seek the advice
of an experienced and
skillful auto product
liability lawyer
immediately.
